Emergency Preparedness

The Great Utah Shakeout

This year’s event is coming up on April 18, 2024. Please participate in some way. There are various ways to participate and it can be done at any time not only on the designated date and time. Most people will participate at 10:15am, but you can hold your drill at any time (and also on any other day of the year if needed).

The Great Utah ShakeOut is an annual event held in Utah to raise awareness about earthquake preparedness and safety. During the drill, participants practice Drop, Cover, and Hold On—a set of actions to take when an earthquake occurs:

  • Drop: Quickly get down on your hands and knees to prevent being knocked over.
  • Cover: Take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture (such as a table or desk) to protect yourself from falling objects.
  • Hold On: Hold on to the furniture you are under to maintain protection during the shaking.

The goal is to ensure that people know what to do in the event of an earthquake and can respond quickly to minimize injuries and damage. The ShakeOut encourages schools, businesses, organizations, and individuals to participate and practice these safety measures. Remember, preparedness saves lives!
