A New Beginning

While we usually associate January as a time of renewal, I’d like to suggest that for families with school-aged children, August is the time of greater renewal. What mother with youth does not devote several days in back-to-school sales in service to her children. While most students returning to school this Fall may most look forward to seeing their friends after the long Summer break, all will be involved in devoting some serious face time to the printed word. What a wonderful and exciting time that the beginning of the school year can be.

Let us take this time to reflect upon what studies we may want to take up in each of our lives. Regardless of whether we are continuing with our formal education, we may need to renew efforts in learning new things and refreshing ourselves in our Gospel study. The Come Follow Me program gives us an opportunity to do just that. I have enjoyed reading from the New Testament this year. We have just finished the Acts of the Apostles in our individual and Sunday study. I am always challenged in understanding the Epistles and their sometimes strange language. I look forward to the Come Follow Me lessons and discussions to help me better understand them.

Our recent stake conference was filled with the Spirit as we heard inspirational testimonies, inspired instruction from our state leaders, and well performed musical selections. If you did not attend stake conference, especially the Saturday evening adult session, you missed out on opportunities to feel the Spirit’s influence and lift. One particular item that you should be aware of is President Whitworth’s challenge to each of us to read the Book of Mormon by the end of the year. This time he has asked us to read it and note the passages where the Book of Mormon demonstrates our Heavenly Father’s grace in dealing with us, his children. This reading challenge is in addition to the reading for our Come Follow Me studies. We are quickly coming to a time when we will need to rely more and more upon our personal study to withstand the challenges to come and to prepare ourselves and our families to overcome the false teachings that are endemic in our culture. May we all take up President Whitworth’s challenge and make this Autumn a time of renewal, a time to be lifted by the Spirit, a time to become ever stronger in Gospel knowledge and Spiritual capacity is my sincere wish and prayer for us all.
